Nebraska Horse Racing Seminar at Grand Island’s New Casino: Opportunities for Horse Lovers

Grand Island’s new casino is set to open soon, bringing new opportunities for horse lovers as the law voters approved allows casinos at horse tracks and requires Nebraska-bred horses in some races. Nebraska Extension is hosting an event at Fonner Park on April 4, 2025, as part of the Race Nebraska initiative to create awareness of these opportunities.

Dr. Kathy Anderson, UNL Extension Horse Specialist, will discuss the role of track stewards, mare care, foaling tips, and the plans of Nebraska racetracks at the event. Detailed information on the routine functions and responsibilities of track stewards will be provided, including a trip to the Stewards’ Stand during a race.

The seminar will feature speakers from the Nebraska Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Nebraska HBPA, racetrack and casino management, as well as Nebraska State Senators and representatives from the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission. The event will cover topics such as racing dates, purses, breeding incentives, stallion awards, and more. Registration is open until March 28 for a $25 fee, increasing to $35 at the door.
