Navigating California’s E-Bike Laws: What You Need to Know

California Vehicle Section 312.5 recognizes three e-bike classifications with different speed limits and restrictions on where they can be ridden. A new law effective Jan. 1 tightens regulations on e-bikes, including fire safety requirements and limitations on hand throttles.

Riding e-bikes on sidewalks is regulated by local laws, with many areas prohibiting it for certain classes of e-bikes. A license or registration is not required to ride an e-bike in California, and penalties for violating e-bike laws include fines for red light violations, not wearing a helmet, riding in prohibited bike lanes, DUI, and unlawfully modifying an e-bike’s motor.

It is important to follow traffic laws and regulations when riding an e-bike to avoid penalties and potential impoundment of the e-bike. This information is a summary of the law and not a substitute for legal advice from a qualified professional.
