Modernizing Tradition: The Evolution of the Emir of Kano’s Sallah Visit

The 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, made a modernized adaptation to his annual Sallah visit by using a convoy of vehicles instead of the traditional horse procession to pay homage to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House in Kano. This change was made in compliance with security protocols that prohibited traditional horse riding in public during the festive period.

Historian Professor Tijjani Naniya provided insights into the historical evolution of the Hawan Nassarwa tradition, explaining that before 1940, the Emir would only visit the Resident at the Government House and return to the palace. The tradition of riding horses and going around Kano to greet everyone was introduced in 1940 when the outskirts of Kano were created and populated by people.

In adherence to the security directive, Sanusi II avoided large crowds and extensive motorcades during the Sallah festivities, opting for a minimal procession with a few cars to the Government House. This adjustment reflects the ongoing effort to balance tradition with contemporary security requirements in Kano.
