A 12-year-old miniature horse named Butter was rescued from a 60-foot-deep well in Lake Elsinore, California after falling through a faulty plywood covering. The animal initially plummeted about 15 feet into the well, which was later measured to be 60 feet deep when the water was siphoned. A team of skilled rescuers including firefighters, animal control officers, and veterinary experts worked together to construct a sling and hoist Butter out of the well with a front-loader.
Despite the treacherous fall, Butter survived without any major injuries, much to the surprise of the rescue team. Veterinarian Dr. Itzel Vizcarra of Riverside County Animal Services assessed Butter on the scene and determined that she was in good condition, despite being visibly shaken. Following the rescue, Butter was treated for pain and minor injuries, wrapped in a blanket to prevent hypothermia, and given pain medication.
After the extraordinary rescue, Butter was reunited with her owner and taken to the vet for a follow-up visit. Animal Services officer Lupe Villa reported that Butter appeared to be doing great following the incident. The rescue team was relieved that their training sessions paid off in a real event and that Butter was able to walk away fine the same day she was rescued.
