Milwaukee Common Council Approves Plan to Reinstate Student Resource Officers in MPS

The Milwaukee Common Council voted 10-4 to approve a plan to put school resource officers back into Milwaukee Public Schools. The city will split the cost of hiring and training the officers with the school district, as required by state law and a court order. Failure to comply could result in fines of nearly $17,000.

City representatives are facing questions about the expedited training process for the 25 officers that need to be hired. Concerns have been raised about the ability of the officers to effectively serve the diverse body of students in Milwaukee Public Schools and make families and children feel safer. Progress needs to be shown by March 15 to avoid fines.
