Nine-year-old Javana Johnston, a member of the Fagan family, won the Horse of the Year event in the show hunter category, competing against much older riders. Her mother, Julia Johnston, was proud of her daughter’s achievements, as Javana also competed with another pony, Starlight Sahara, and showed sportsmanship after a couple of falls.
Julia Johnston, who grew up in Te Kūiti and now lives in Ōtewā, bred the ponies that Javana rode to victory. Javana also placed in several other events and series, showing her talent and dedication to the sport. The family’s involvement in horse riding extends to Javana’s cousins, who also achieved wins and placings in show jumping events.
The competitive spirit runs in the family, with Javana’s cousins Hannah and Twyla Ashwell also excelling in various events at the Horse of the Year competition. The success of the three cousins reflects their dedication to the sport and the support they receive from their mothers, who have a background in riding and breeding horses.
