Magnitude, the impressive winner of the Grade 2 Risen Star at 43-1, is now off the Kentucky Derby 2025 trail due to a bone chip in his left ankle. The Not This Time colt trained by Steve Asmussen will undergo surgery by Dr. Larry Bramlage, with no set timeframe for his return until after a post-surgical assessment. Magnitude had jumped to second place on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 55 points after his gate-to-wire victory in the Risen Star, with his odds shortening from 90-1 to 30-1.
Purchased by Winchell Thoroughbreds for $450,000 as a yearling, Magnitude has a record of 7: 3-1-0 and earnings of $302,500. Prior to his Risen Star win, he finished sixth in the Lecomte (G3) and second in the Gun Runner. Asmussen, who has yet to win a Kentucky Derby, finished second in 2022 with Epicenter, also owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds. Magnitude’s unexpected injury has now taken him out of contention for the prestigious race.
Magnitude’s victory in the Risen Star had propelled him into the spotlight as a serious Kentucky Derby contender, but the bone chip has derailed those plans. With his odds shortening and his impressive performance in the Risen Star, Magnitude’s absence from the Derby trail due to surgery is a setback for his connections and fans who were hopeful for his success in the upcoming race.
