Louisiana Teen Saves Family and Horse After Terrifying Car Accident

A 14-year-old Louisiana teen, Mia Gilpin, saved her family and horse after a car accident on I-59 near Slidell. The Gilpin family was struck by a white pickup truck, causing their horse trailer to break loose and land near a canal. Mia immediately sprang into action, breaking windows, calling 911, and leading her parents to safety before swimming through the canal to rescue their horse, Whiskey.

Despite the terrifying accident, the Gilpin family is grateful that Whiskey only needs medicine and time to heal and will be able to ride again soon. However, they are frustrated that the driver responsible for the hit and run did not stop, potentially putting others in danger. Louisiana State Police are asking for any information about the driver involved in the accident.

Living in South Louisiana presents unique challenges, from unpredictable weather to surprise mosquito invasions. To be prepared for anything, every true South Louisianian should keep essential items in their car that reflect life in the Pelican State. These items include necessities like a first aid kit, jumper cables, and a flashlight, among others.
