West Point Thoroughbreds, Spendthrift Farm, and St. Elias stable secured a colt by Tiz the Law for $1.5 million at the OBS Spring Sale, marking a successful partnership with longtime consignor Steven Venosa. Venosa’s S G V Thoroughbreds produced the sale’s top two prices, including the $1.45 million Gun Runner colt sold to Kerri Radcliffe. The Tiz the Law colt, Hip 1094, was bred in Louisiana and has shown impressive growth since being purchased as a yearling.
The OBS Spring sale saw a total gross of $88,761,500 from 637 sold, marking a 7.7% increase over the previous year. The average price of $139,343 set a new record, with 128 horses failing to meet their reserve. The demand for offspring by Tiz the Law was evident throughout the sale, with Hip 970 selling for $825,000 and Hip 1094 topping the auction at $1.5 million.
Longtime consignor Eddie Woods sent his final horse through the ring before retiring, generating a fitting result with a son of Twirling Candy selling for $560,000. Woods, who helped revolutionize juvenile auctions, has had a successful career at OBS and will be missed by the industry. The next sale on the OBS calendar is the June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale in June.
