An event at the Mesa County Fairgrounds in late June will offer the opportunity to adopt 72 of the 98 horses removed from the Little Books Cliffs Wild Horse Range last year. Friends of the Mustangs is involved in promoting the event and has already taken in 16 horses for fostering and gentling before adoption. Potential adopters can participate in a silent auction hosted by Grand Valley Horse Rescue to support the event.
The Bureau of Land Management conducted a roundup operation last year to protect the remaining horses and their habitat on the range. The event will also feature activities such as an EQUUS Film & Art Fest, Art of the Mustang event, and a Mustang Summit Gala to benefit Grand Valley Horse Rescue. Some of the horses removed from the range last year will have foals and cannot be adopted out in June, but may be available for adoption later.
The adoption event is part of the Colorado Mustang West event from June 25-28, which will include various activities and a film screening of the Meeker Mustang Makeover. More information on adopting wild horses can be found on the BLM website.
