Legislation to Align Thoroughbred Horse Racing Industry with Live Gaming in Florida Advances

The House Commerce Committee advanced legislation (HB 105) introduced by Tarpon Springs Republican Adam Anderson to align the thoroughbred horse racing industry with other live gaming in Florida. The bill aims to support the horse racing community by decoupling racing from other forms of gambling like slots and cards, ensuring the industry’s future for at least the next five years.

Despite opposition from veterinarians, breeders, and trainers who believe the bill would devastate the industry, the committee approved the legislation, which now heads to the House floor. Supporters of the bill, including Anderson, argue that it would benefit the entire industry by providing flexibility in moving permits between facilities and maximizing transparency in allocating funds to breeders and owners.

Critics of the bill, such as Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners Association CEO Lonny Powell, express dismay over the potential negative impact on the industry, claiming that it would lead to fewer races, fewer jobs, and fewer opportunities for those involved in the industry. Powell warns that passing the bill could result in the loss of jobs and opportunities in Florida, sending them to other states like Canada and ultimately dismantling a major industry that has contributed to the state’s economy for generations.
