Legendary Showjumper John Whitaker Takes on Eventing Challenge

Legendary showjumper John Whitaker, who turns 70 this year, has decided to try his hand at eventing as a new challenge. He considered dressage and vaulting but ultimately chose eventing due to its excitement and the attire required for vaulting. His decision was confirmed by a young horse sired by his stallion Argento and a thoroughbred mare, showing exceptional jumping ability, speed, and movement.

John has been competing in dressage up to advanced intermediate level under the pseudonym Hugh Jeauke, his great-uncle who rode at Badminton before the war. He plans to secure his and Filaloor P’s eligibility requirements for five-star events this season, with the goal of competing at Badminton next spring. John enjoys the challenge of learning something new every day and is considering aiming for the LA Olympics in three years.

Despite his lack of experience in eventing, John is determined to do it properly and has been enjoying the process of learning and improving his skills. He had initially planned to compete at the Lycetts Grantham Cup at the Thoresby Spring Carnival but had to change his plans due to a scheduling conflict with the World Cup Final in Basel. John’s transition to eventing represents a new chapter in his illustrious career as a showjumper.
