Lecomte Stakes Contenders: A Closer Look at the Field

Innovator, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, finally found the winner’s circle in his seventh start after finishing second in four races against tough competition. By first-crop sire Authentic, Innovator has a strong pedigree and received a 101 Equibase speed figure for his maiden-breaking effort. Lukas has a solid record with sprint-to-route runners, making Innovator a contender in the Lecomte.

Maximum Promise, trained by Kenny McPeek, switched surfaces and running styles to win by 14 1/2 lengths at Ellis Park. By first-crop sire Maximum Security, Maximum Promise has a strong late-pace figure and has been breezing consistently. However, this will be his first start off a layoff, and McPeek’s stats with runners off a layoff are not as strong, making Maximum Promise a pass in the Lecomte.

Admiral Dennis, trained by Brad Cox, had a rough outing in the Gun Runner Stakes but has shown potential in previous races. By Constitution, Admiral Dennis has a strong pedigree and could be a factor in the Lecomte if he runs to his potential. Cox has him cross-entered in another race, but with jockey Joel Rosario aboard, Admiral Dennis is worth considering in exotics.
