Journalism and Citizen Bull, top contenders for the Kentucky Derby, are set to meet in the Santa Anita Derby, a race that has produced 14 Kentucky Derby winners in the last 50 years. However, due to the intimidating presence of these two horses, the Santa Anita Derby will offer fewer qualifying points than other major preps.

The Santa Anita Derby, originally offering 100-50-25-15-10 qualifying points, has drawn a field of five horses, including Journalism, Citizen Bull, Baeza, Westwood, and Barnes. The rule change by Churchill Downs has already cost Journalism and Barnes points from their previous races.

Journalism, trained by Michael McCarthy, is looking to secure his first Santa Anita Derby victory, while Bob Baffert, with a record nine wins in the race, will saddle Citizen Bull and Barnes. John Shirreffs has entered Baeza and Westwood, both by former Baffert runners, in the upcoming race.
