An investigation into animal neglect in Suffolk, Virginia led officials to discover 6 dead horses and 22 others in grave condition. The Suffolk Police Department’s Animal Control Division officers and a licensed veterinarian are working to safely remove the horses from the property and transport them to undisclosed rescue organizations and shelters within Virginia for veterinary care. Multiple search warrants have been executed at the property and nearby locations owned by the same individuals.
The investigation began after allegations of neglect in the 1200 block of Buckhorn Drive, where officers found 22 horses in poor condition and six dead horses in varying states of decomposition. The deceased horses have been transported for necropsy, while the remaining horses will receive treatment from an independent licensed veterinarian. The 22 neglected horses will be impounded under an order from Suffolk General District Court and removed once suitable boarding arrangements are secured.
The Suffolk Animal Control Division, in coordination with the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, is leading the ongoing investigation into the animal neglect case. The horses found alive will be relocated to receive veterinary care, while the deceased horses are being examined for further information. Multiple search warrants have been executed as part of the investigation into the neglect of these animals.
