Introducing the TRT Young Talent Competition: A New Approach to Young Dressage Horse Classes

The TRT Young Talent Competition is a new format for young dressage horse classes developed by Tristan Tucker to provide a positive and confidence-building introduction to competition for four- and five-year-old horses. The initiative aims to address the struggles that many horses face in the current competition system and to promote a more relaxed and harmonious approach to training and competition.

The competition format includes in-hand work, obstacle zones, mounting, and rein back, with a focus on relaxation, independence, and the rider’s ability to guide calmly. The tests for both four- and five-year-olds include elements such as walking in hand, navigating zones, mounting unaided, and ridden work in walk, trot, and canter. The scoring system is less rigid than traditional tests, with no penalties for errors of course or use of the voice.

Key differences in language and scoring criteria set the TRT Young Talent Competition apart from traditional young horse competitions, with a greater emphasis on the horse’s presentation, relaxation, and partnership with the rider. While the concept has received support from top riders and judges, concerns have been raised about the need for greater clarity around the scoring system and the time allowed for each test. No formal competition rollout has been announced yet, but the initiative aims to revolutionize young horse competitions and promote a more harmonious and relaxed approach to training and competition.
