The University of Kentucky Sports Medicine Research Institute (SMRI) is focusing on improving safety in the horse racing industry through their Equestrian Athlete Initiative. They recently presented their research findings at the Organization of Racing Investigators conference, highlighting the need for better concussion education and awareness among those in the industry, especially jockeys and other individuals with direct horse contact.
The Equestrian Athlete Initiative’s research has shown that jockeys and other individuals in the horse racing industry are at high risk for concussions, with two-thirds of jockeys reporting at least one concussion in their career. The initiative is working to provide targeted interventions and education to improve the health, wellness, and performance of equestrians across their lifespans.
Through their survey, the Equestrian Athlete Initiative is gathering data on how individuals in the industry prefer to receive concussion education, whether in-person or through e-learning. This information will help them tailor their educational materials to be most effective for different groups within the horse racing community, ultimately promoting safety and well-being in the sport.
