Improving Equine Welfare in Horse Breeding: A Collaborative Research Project with Hartpury University and WBFSH

Hartpury University and the WBFSH are collaborating on a research project to improve equine welfare in horse breeding. Led by Prof. Jane Williams, the project aims to create evidence-based recommendations for enhancing sport horse welfare in breeding, with contributions from other researchers and students. The findings will inform the development of a WBFSH Welfare Charter and Welfare Codes of Conduct.

The WBFSH Welfare Report and Statement highlight the organization’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of horses involved in breeding. President Jan Pedersen expressed gratitude for the research team’s efforts and emphasized the importance of responsible breeding practices for the welfare of horses. The project employed a three-stage methodology, including interviews with industry stakeholders, a literature review, and focus groups to identify key welfare concerns in horse breeding.

Future phases of the project will involve working with member studbooks to implement the findings and promote equine welfare. Hartpury University is dedicated to improving horse welfare, with collaborations with organizations like the NEWC and a commitment to the Horse Welfare Charter. The research aims to lead to real improvements in horse welfare worldwide.
