Illegal Horse Smuggling Operation Intercepted at Dover Port: 20 Horses Rescued

Authorities at Dover Port intercepted an illegal transport of 20 horses, suspected to be smuggled for slaughter in mainland Europe, despite the Animal Welfare Act. The horses were found in critical condition, with some suffering from contagious diseases like strangles and pneumonia.

Veterinary examinations revealed that five Irish Thoroughbreds had to be euthanised due to poor health, while others were claimed by their owners. World Horse Welfare took responsibility for the abandoned horses, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and a digital equine identification system to prevent illegal transport.

Efforts are being made to find safe homes for the rescued horses, who are now receiving proper care at World Horse Welfare’s rescue center. Animal welfare experts are calling for improved identification and tracking systems to prevent future incidents of illegal horse smuggling.
