Mikenna Hallock, an eventer, launched Three Beat Farms in Oregon City, Oregon, in 2021 and sought opportunities to enhance her training skills via a partnership with the nonprofit organization Sound Equine Options (SEO). This collaboration led her to encounter Sally Cat, a timid mare who had not been separated from her mother until she arrived at the rescue. Despite her physical attributes, Sally Cat lacked confidence and faced emotional barriers due to her past, which involved being taken in by the rescue after her owner’s prolonged illness.
After undergoing extensive groundwork to build trust, Sally Cat, later named Kitty by Mikenna, became part of Hallock’s training program. Although initially reserved and anxious, consistent work with Mikenna and professional training gradually helped Kitty gain confidence. Their journey together saw Kitty transitioning from an insecure horse to a promising eventing partner who displayed enthusiasm for challenges, particularly in the jumping phases of competitions.
By 2023, after successfully competing in several horse trials, including achieving ribbons at various events, Mikenna and Kitty progressed to novice-level competitions. Besides their competitive accomplishments, Mikenna emphasized the invaluable lessons in patience and connection she learned through this partnership with Kitty. Looking ahead, Mikenna aims to continue Kitty’s training and hopes to inspire others to consider rescuing and nurturing horses with uncertain backgrounds.
