Houston Humane Society Expands Adoption Program to Include Farm Animals

The Houston Humane Society has expanded its adoption program to include farm animals such as horses, a donkey, a mule, and a potbelly pig. Many of these animals were rescued from situations of animal cruelty and neglect. The shelter hopes to place these animals with responsible pet owners in both rural and urban communities.

Bryce Madison, a student involved in the Ridge Point High School FFA, was the first person to adopt two horses from the Houston Humane Society. He has a passion for horses and was moved to adopt Miss Cookie and Diamond, who had survived abuse and neglect together. Madison hopes to train the horses for trail rides and rodeo events, and plans to adopt more horses in the future.

In collaboration with Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, the Houston Humane Society has developed behavioral and medical assessments to ensure that livestock are physically and mentally ready for adoption. The adoption process is through the ASPCA, and the program officially launched in February 2025. The organization is focusing on rescuing livestock from cruelty and abuse cases, with plans to accept surrendered farm animals in the future.
