From Attorney to Ranch Hand: How Ami Cullen’s Courage Saved a Colorado Dude Ranch

Ami Cullen left her career as an attorney on the East Coast to work on a Colorado dude ranch, where she eventually became the director of equestrian operations. When the East Troublesome fire threatened the ranch, she and her husband, along with the help of the community, worked to save the property and all 200 horses on it. The experience inspired her to write a book called “Running Free” based on her own life and the challenges she faced during the fire.

The C Lazy U ranch was temporarily closed due to the East Troublesome fire, which destroyed several buildings and fences on the property. Despite the challenges, all 200 horses were successfully relocated and saved. The Cullens, along with the support of the community, were able to rebuild and reopen the ranch, with most of the wooden structures replaced by metal.

Ami Cullen’s decision to leave her legal career behind and pursue her passion for horses led to her saving the C Lazy U ranch during the East Troublesome fire. She now lives a fulfilling life on the ranch with her husband, where they work long hours but find joy in the daily challenges and rewards of ranch life.
