Frankie Dettori, Legendary Jockey, to File for Bankruptcy amid Tax Dispute

Frankie Dettori, a highly successful jockey in horse racing, has announced he will file for bankruptcy due to a dispute with British tax authorities. The 54-year-old Italian, now based in the United States, has been in a legal battle with HM Revenue and Customs over denied tax deductions. Dettori expressed regret and advised others to take control of their financial matters.

Dettori, who has over 3,350 victories, had previously announced his retirement in December 2022 but later reversed that decision to compete in the United States. Last April, he won six consecutive races at Santa Anita and did his signature flying dismount after each win. Filing for bankruptcy is a significant decision for Dettori, acknowledging that its consequences will impact him for years to come.

The jockey’s advisers had been working with HMRC for six months to find a solution to his financial situation before ultimately deciding to file for bankruptcy. Dettori expressed sadness and embarrassment over the outcome, emphasizing the importance of taking control of one’s financial matters. Despite this setback, Dettori’s impressive career in horse racing has solidified his status as one of the sport’s most successful jockeys.
