First Mission Surges to Victory in 2025 Oaklawn Handicap

First Mission won the Grade 2, $1.25 million Oaklawn Handicap for older horses by surging to the front at the top of the stretch and pulling away to a two-length victory. The Godolphin homebred trained by Brad Cox completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.09, the fastest clocking for the distance of the current Oaklawn season. Jockey Flavian Prat earned his third win of the day and second in a stakes race with First Mission.

Banishing briefly took the lead at the eighth pole after tracking the early pace set by Skippylongstocking and Go West Go, ultimately finishing second. Skippylongstocking held on for third, finishing one length in front of Disarm. Alexander Helios, Red Route One, Tarantino, and Go West Go completed the finish in that order behind the top three finishers in the race.

First Mission, the 7-5 favorite in the eight-horse field, returned $2 mutuels of $4.80, $3.00, and $2.20 for the win. The victory marked First Mission’s sixth win from 12 career starts, and the $693,750 earned improved his career bankroll to $2,060,170. Jockey Flavian Prat’s successful day included three wins and two stakes race victories.
