Father and Son Duo Swim 66 Lengths to Raise Money for Cancer Research and Marie Curie

Architect Neil Pennell, 48, and his son Joseph, 15, are planning to swim 66 lengths at Bridgnorth Leisure Centre in March to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie, and Swimathon Foundation. This challenge is in memory of Neil’s sister Kay, who died of breast cancer at 43 in May 2020, and for Joseph’s grandmothers who also died of cancer. The Swimathon event is the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim, taking place from March 28 to 30 at various locations across the UK.

Neil and Joseph hope to inspire others to support causes close to their hearts by sharing their story and participating in the Swimathon event. Neil’s sister Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer at 39, underwent treatment, but the cancer returned and spread. Neil and his wife set up The Kit Foundation to raise funds for alternative treatment, and now they want to support other families and cancer research. Neil emphasized that swimming is a great way to get fit, clear your head, and achieve something worthwhile, regardless of fitness level.

Swimmers of all ages and abilities can participate in Swimathon by choosing from a variety of individual challenges or team relays. Participants can also sign up for MySwimathon to complete their swim at a time and venue that suits them between March 21 and April 21. Since its inception in 1986, Swimathon has raised over £55 million for various charities, and Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie are urging swimmers to take part to support their important work in cancer research and end-of-life care.
