Enrolling Horse Riders to Help Police the Countryside: Essex Horse Rider Volunteer Scheme

Essex Police have launched the Essex Horse Rider Volunteer Scheme to utilize horse riders in spotting signs of crimes in the countryside, where police patrols may not reach. Common countryside crimes include damage at historic sites, stolen agricultural machines, and wildlife crimes like hare coursing. With a large rural area and numerous heritage assets in Essex, the police need help in policing these quieter locations.

Volunteers in the scheme are instructed to report any suspicious activity they see while riding, providing as much detail as possible and any evidence they may have, such as helmet cam footage or photographs. However, they are advised not to confront suspects or put themselves in harm’s way. Interested individuals can sign up for the scheme by completing a form, attending an introduction session, and having their horse checked by Essex Police for fitness, insurance, and provided with a florescent tabard.

The scheme allows horse riders to access areas that police patrol cars cannot, such as narrow country lanes, byways, and bridleways. By enrolling in the scheme, volunteers can help protect the countryside and heritage assets in Essex by being additional eyes and ears for the police in these often overlooked areas.
