Enhancing Equine Welfare: Mare and Foal Sanctuary Hosts Specialist Training Day

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon hosted a specialist training day focused on enhancing staff skills in equine welfare and rescue. The event featured a full-sized horse mannequin named Max, funded by supporters, which has become a valuable training tool for staff and veterinary professionals. The training session was held in collaboration with the British Animal Rescue and Trauma Association (BARTA) and included practical demonstrations to help participants gain hands-on experience in equine rescue scenarios.

BARTA provided essential skills and knowledge to newly qualified vets attending the training, strengthening their ability to deliver effective care and respond appropriately in emergencies. The training included discussions on the best approach for equine casualties in various scenarios, building confidence and professional knowledge on both sides. The Mare and Foal Sanctuary reaffirmed its commitment to promoting best practices in equine welfare through collaborative training initiatives, which not only equipped attendees with vital skills but also strengthened connections within the equine welfare community.

The event was supported by Richard Frost of Tor Equine Vets, who emphasized the importance of the BARTA training in giving vets confidence when facing potentially stressful rescue situations. The practical demonstrations using a horsebox and tractor brought the training to life, allowing vets to apply what they learned in real-world scenarios. The partnership between The Mare and Foal Sanctuary and BARTA provided an exceptional regional venue for training and ensured that those working in equine welfare have access to the best training available.
