End of an Era: Shamrock Farm in Carroll County Prepares for New Thoroughbred Training Center

Shamrock Farm in Carroll County is being dismantled to make way for a new Thoroughbred training center as part of the redevelopment plan for Pimlico Raceway. The Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority chose Shamrock Farm for the facility after a year of study, with plans for a mile dirt oval and at least 800 stalls. The changes are bittersweet, as the renowned breeding farm is leaving the industry but the investment in the training center shows the state’s support for racing.

Jim Steele, the longtime farm manager at Shamrock Farm, has been there for 48 years and has made a significant impact on Maryland’s horse industry. He expanded breeding, added semen collection services, and operated as a quarantine station for exporting horses. Steele’s freedom to operate the farm allowed him to serve in numerous horse and farming groups, leading studies to develop a statewide Maryland horse park plan and promoting the industry through tours and events.

As the transition continues at Shamrock Farm, Steele is moving into a house in town and plans to travel with his wife and sons. Despite leaving the farm, he is not fully disappearing from the industry and expresses his dislike for retirement. Steele’s legacy at Shamrock Farm and his contributions to the Maryland horse industry will be remembered as the farm makes way for the new Thoroughbred training center.
