Driving Equine Welfare: The WBFSH’s Research Project to Enhance Sports Horse Health and Wellbeing

The World Breeding Federation for Sports Horses (WBFSH) is using its unique position to improve equine health and welfare in the sports horse industry globally. Through scientific research and data, the WBFSH has commissioned a project to develop evidence-based recommendations for enhancing sports horse welfare in breeding, leading to the creation of a Welfare Charter and draft Welfare Codes of Conduct.

The research project, led by Prof. Jane M. Williams, focused on key welfare considerations throughout the breeding cycle, including selection of breeding stock, management of breeding stock, and foal and youngstock management. The project highlighted the need for future research and industry guidance to integrate specific consideration of horse welfare and recommend best practices to provide horses with an overall good life.

The WBFSH Welfare Statement is underpinned by welfare values that prioritize individual horse welfare, promote indicators of health and longevity in breeding strategies, and support responsible and ethical breeding practices. The organization will work with member studbooks to implement the project findings, integrate a welfare statement into its statutes, and continue to prioritize equine welfare across all aspects of the breeding industry through education, evidence-based practices, ethics, and execution.
