Galway Downs, which was proposed as the equestrian venue for the 2028 Olympics, was unexpectedly removed from consideration, despite the Los Angeles City Council’s unanimous approval. The LA28 Organizing Committee informed Galway Downs, the City of Temecula, and Riverside County that another location had been chosen, leaving many surprised and disappointed.
Despite being excluded from the Olympic spotlight, Galway Downs owner Ken Smith stated that the venue will continue to host elite equestrian competitions and other sporting events. The decision to remove Galway Downs from consideration came after doubts began to emerge ahead of the IOC meeting, with several lawmakers urging the IOC to keep the venue in the plan.
The LA28 committee has not publicly confirmed the new venue chosen for the equestrian events, leaving many in the region, including Temecula Mayor Brenden Kalfus and Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington, disappointed but optimistic about the future of Galway Downs as a world-class equestrian destination in Temecula Valley.
