Debate Over Florida Horse Racing Industry Sparks Controversy

A new bill in Florida, House Bill 105, is causing controversy as it seeks to allow the two remaining horse tracks in the state to stop offering live horse races and instead explore other gambling options like slot machines and card rooms. The bill has raised concerns about potential economic fallout, including the loss of thousands of jobs and billions in revenue, particularly in Marion County, home to the third-largest thoroughbred industry in the U.S.

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ & Owners’ Association, based in Ocala, has warned that the bill could have devastating effects on the industry, with CEO Lonny Powell arguing that stopping live racing would harm Florida’s competitive standing in the horse racing world. Powell expressed concern that breeders and trainers might choose to do business in other states if Florida abandons live racing, potentially leading to significant losses in economic impact and jobs.

Despite concerns raised by industry leaders, Rep. Adam Anderson, the sponsor of House Bill 105, defended the bill, stating that it aims to support the continuation of racing in Florida and help horse tracks make better business decisions to invest in their parks. The two horse tracks affected by the bill, Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park Racing, declined to comment on the proposal.
