Crisis at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary: Caring for 130 Equines in Critical Need

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is currently caring for 130 equines across its four sites in the South West, all of which were rescued due to critical need of intervention. The charity is also monitoring around 200 horses in the region after concerns were raised by the public about their welfare, with many facing challenges such as lack of shelter, food, and proper care.

The sanctuary has seen an increase in workload during the colder months, with many horses suffering from overgrown hooves, poor teeth, infected skin, lice, and heavy worm burden. The charity is working tirelessly to support struggling owners and investigate welfare concerns, collaborating with other agencies and charities when necessary. The cost of living crisis and extreme weather conditions have further impacted the welfare of equines and the ability of some owners to provide adequate care.

According to a survey, 81% of horse owners are concerned about increased costs, with 39% stating that the cost of living crisis has affected their ability to care for their equines. The Mare and Foal Sanctuary emphasizes the importance of responsible land management to provide a healthy environment for rescued horses and ponies, highlighting the crucial role of supporters in assisting these animals in need.
