Controversial Proposal to Separate Racing and Casino Businesses at Gulfstream Park: Horsemen Air Strong Opinions

Horsemen are set to discuss a proposal by Gulfstream Park to separate its racing and casino businesses in meetings this week. The Stronach Group wants to decouple its Thoroughbred and slot-machine licenses, which has raised concerns among owners and trainers. The proposal could potentially lead to the sale and closure of Gulfstream Park, as seen with Calder Casino.

The Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association has agreed to support the decoupling proposal, citing increased purses, aftercare funding, and workers-compensation benefits. However, the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association has stopped recognizing the FTHA, raising further concerns about the impact of the proposed changes. The proposed bill would remove the requirement for Thoroughbred permit holders to conduct live racing to maintain a slot-machine license.

The FTHA meetings are not expected to be open to the public, but horsemen are expected to voice strong opposition to the decoupling proposal. The potential impact on the horse-racing industry in Florida has raised concerns among trainers and owners, who fear the negative consequences of separating racing and casino operations at Gulfstream Park.
