Coal Battle, a previously recognized “feel-good” story of small-time connections in the 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby, emerged as a serious contender after winning the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Breaking from the rail in a 13-horse field, Coal Battle secured a 1 1/4-length victory, earning his fourth consecutive win and 50 additional qualifying points, putting him in first place on the leaderboard with 70 points.
Jockey Juan Vargas expertly guided Coal Battle from an inside position, strategically positioning him off the pace set by Madaket Road. Coal Battle showcased his versatility by making an early move approaching the three-eighths pole and ultimately taking command entering the stretch. Despite carrying five pounds more than his rival, Coal Battle broke free and crossed the wire first in 1:43.01, solidifying his status as a serious Kentucky Derby contender.
The victory in the Rebel Stakes not only secured Coal Battle’s spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate but also elevated his career earnings to over $1 million. Trainer Lonnie Briley plans to take Coal Battle to the Arkansas Derby on March 29 for one more race before the Kentucky Derby, anticipating strong competition in the upcoming race.
