Churchill Downs Inc. has opened Owensboro Racing & Gaming, their seventh historical horse racing entertainment venue in Kentucky. The $100 million venue features 600 historical racing machines, a sportsbook, simulcast wagering, and food and beverage options. The venue will support purse funding for Ellis Park’s summer racing meet.
CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen stated that the opening of Owensboro Racing & Gaming marks an exciting milestone for the company and will drive tourism, entertainment, and economic opportunities in eastern Daviess County. Churchill Downs purchased Ellis Park in 2022 for $79 million and has already invested millions in enhancements and repairs on the property.
Historical horse racing gaming has been profitable for racetrack operators, with CDI reporting record net income in the third quarter of 2024. Ellis Park saw a 20% increase in all-sources handle in 2024 compared to previous years, indicating the success of the venue and the impact of HHR gaming on purse growth at Kentucky racetracks.
