Christopher L. Merz Named Executive Director of Maryland Racing Commission Amid Industry Changes

Christopher L. Merz has been appointed as the new executive director of the Maryland Racing Commission, succeeding Mike Hopkins who retired after 41 years with the commission. Merz brings extensive experience in the industry, having held positions at various racetracks and as a consultant focusing on business operations and safety.

Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Portia Wu expressed confidence in Merz’s ability to lead Maryland racing through industry transformations. The Maryland Racing Commission, chaired by George P. Mahoney, Jr., oversees horse racing meets in the state. Major changes in the industry include the establishment of a new Maryland Jockey Club to manage daily racing operations.

Merz is tasked with navigating the changes in Maryland’s racing industry, including a new nonprofit managing daily racing operations and efforts to revitalize the Preakness Stakes. Plans for a new training facility at Shamrock Farm are also in the works. Merz, who holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science, is committed to propelling the sport into an innovative and sustainable future while honoring Maryland’s racing heritage.
