Changing Lives Through Therapeutic Horseriding at COPS Barn

COPS Barn in Rockland offers therapeutic horseback riding for special needs children and adults. Program director Derek Drobenak has a passion for helping participants come out of their shell and gain confidence through interactions with therapy horses. The barn has a serene atmosphere and a variety of activities to engage participants, including an indoor barn, outdoor riding area, and Sensory Trail.

The therapy horses at COPS Barn undergo a vetting process to ensure they can handle working with children with disabilities. The barn works with around 50 participants a week, including special education students from the Nanuet School District. Participants benefit from increased confidence, core strength development, and unique skills such as grooming and steering a horse through cones.

COPS Barn offers therapeutic riding, focusing on developing riding skills, as opposed to hippotherapy which focuses on specific therapy lessons. The barn is always looking for volunteers to help with grooming, saddling, and assisting participants during lessons. Volunteers can work with the same participant consistently to track progress and are welcome to come for an hour or more during weekday or weekend lessons.
