Elizabeth Breton, a 100-year-old horse rider from Cirencester, has been riding since she was two years old and has no plans to give up her reins. Despite taking a 30-year break from riding, she returned to the sport in her 70s and has been riding competitively for a number of years. She believes riding is the best way to exercise her whole body and still enjoys it, riding twice a week at Cotswold Riding Stables in Stanton.
Born in 1924, Ms Breton grew up on a farm in Lincolnshire where riding horses was just a part of life. She has always been horse-mad and recalls being put on a pony by her father before she could even walk. One of her earliest memories in the saddle was riding a pony named Snowflake when she was seven years old. Despite the interruption of World War Two, Ms Breton got back into riding in her 70s and reignited her passion for the sport.
Ms Breton rode competitively in hunter trials, with one of her favorite disciplines being jumping. Although she no longer competes, she still enjoys riding and looks forward to her hacks around the village of Stanton twice a week. Riding horses makes her feel alive and she believes it is the most exciting form of exercise for her.
