Jane Stelkia, the oldest living member of the Osoyoos Indian Band, celebrated her 95th birthday with a horseback ride at Indian Grove Riding Stables in Osoyoos. More than two dozen riders, including Chief Clarence Louie, joined her for the ride to Spirit Ridge Resort, where they enjoyed a meal of roast beef and mashed potatoes. Stelkia, a lifelong rancher, has been riding horses since she was a little girl and continues to do so on her birthday each year.
Stelkia’s family presented her with Wampum beads made by her grandmother over a century ago, which hold deep spiritual meaning. She expressed her pride in her culture and the importance of horse riding in her community. Stelkia’s son, Aaron, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support in celebrating his mother’s birthday, and her granddaughter, Bonnie, highlighted Stelkia’s continued activity and inspiration to others.
Chief Clarence Louie praised Stelkia for her wisdom and work ethic, attributing her longevity to staying active and working hard. Stelkia’s extraordinary life was celebrated with short films and memories of her younger years, with her family and community coming together to honor her legacy. Louie expressed his deep appreciation for Stelkia as a friend and treasure within the Osoyoos Indian Band.
