Burnaby Equestrians Fight to Save Beloved Riding Trail from Paving

For over 50 years, the Burnaby Horsemen’s Association has provided horse-related activities and lessons to residents in the city, with 288 members and 59 horses. The association hosts community events and an annual open house for people to interact with the horses. However, the City of Burnaby’s decision to pave the Burnaby Lake Southeast Greenway has shocked BHA members and volunteers, as it would prevent them from using the trail for horse riding.

BHA board member Erika Nassichuk expressed concern that paving the trail would make it impossible for horses to use, as they are not trained for paved surfaces. The trail is essential for riders to learn, exercise their horses, and pursue the sport. Nassichuk emphasized that BHA members want to work with the city to find a solution that accommodates all park users.

During a council meeting, Coun. Sav Dhaliwal expressed support for the BHA and suggested referring the issue to the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture department. The council voted to refer the matter to the PRC staff, who will come back with recommendations at a later date. The BHA delegation hopes to work with the city to find a solution that allows them to continue using the trail for horse-related activities.
