Breeder Beau Lane’s Legacy: From $150 Mares to Grade 1 Winners

Beau Lane, a longtime breeder, was not surprised by Banks’ victory in the $250,000 Rushaway Stakes at Turfway Park. Banks is the first foal out of Blip Says Bye, a mare from a family Lane has owned for four generations. Lane operates Woodline Farm and Beau Lane Bloodstock with his family, breeding around 150-180 horses at any given time.

Lane has bred many successful horses, including Jackie’s Warrior, Carpe Diem, and Tapitsfly. He sold Banks for $7,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale, feeling it was a bargain. Lane puts a lot of time into the matings of his broodmares, following the philosophy of breeding a fast mare to a classic horse.

Banks broke his maiden impressively at Turfway Park and won the Rushaway Stakes, proving his worth in the 3-year-old division. Lane also mentioned Colloquial, a 3-year-old son of Vekoma, as another exciting horse to watch. Despite his many successful horses, Lane is still searching for that one great horse he has been after for 60 years.
