Breaking Boundaries: Women in China’s Horse-Riding Border Control Cavalry

Mareyam Ahmat, a computer science graduate, found her calling in the horse-riding border control cavalry in Baicheng, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Despite initial concerns about physical fitness, she was inspired by the unit’s meaningful work, which includes reinforcing border security and assisting local herders during seasonal migrations. Mareyam is one of only 15 women in the 120-member cavalry, undergoing rigorous training in horsemanship skills.

Mikrayi Sidik, the head of the female unit, also overcame obstacles to join the cavalry, impressing officials with her dedication and skills. The cavalry’s unique role has not only provided opportunities for women like Mareyam and Mikrayi but has also contributed to economic growth in their community. Equestrian shows for tourists have led to the establishment of businesses that create jobs for over 240 locals, increasing average monthly income.

Mareyam and Mikrayi’s stories symbolize the transformation of expectations for women in traditionally male-dominated roles. Through their passion, resilience, and determination, they have impacted their community positively and challenged societal norms. As they continue to patrol and support local families, Mareyam and Mikrayi embody the spirit of the cavalry, showcasing the empowerment of women in Xinjiang.
