The Bureau of Land Management will be hosting a two-day wild horse and burro event in Hugo, Oklahoma on March 28-29 at the Hugo rodeo arena. The event will feature 100 wild horses and burros available for adoption, with adoptions taking place on both days. These animals were once roaming free on public lands in the west, and the adoption program is essential for managing healthy herds and protecting rangeland resources.
Interested adopters must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse, and have a minimum of four hundred square feet of corral space per animal with access to food, water, and shelter. Different corral fence heights are required based on the age of the animal, and all animals must be transported in covered, stock-type trailers with specific requirements. BLM staff will be present at the event to assist with the application process and approve applications onsite.
The Hugo rodeo arena is the location for the event, and those interested can call toll-free or visit the BLM website for more information. Since 1973, BLM has successfully placed over 280,000 wild horses and burros in approved homes across the country through adoption and sale programs.
