BLM to Host Wild Horse and Burro Adoptions in Colorado: Limited Spots Available for America’s Living Legends

The Bureau of Land Management will be hosting wild horse and burro adoptions on March 14, July 25, and August 8, 2025, at the Cañon City Holding Facility in Colorado. Only ten adopter spots are available per date, and reservations must be made one week prior to the event by contacting [email protected] or 719-269-8549.

Individuals who are eligible and can provide good homes will have the opportunity to adopt the horses and burros. The BLM has placed nearly 300,000 wild horses and burros into private care since 1971, providing a chance to give a home to one of America’s Living Legends.

To qualify for adoption, applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse. Homes must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with appropriate access to food, water, and shelter. The corral fence must meet height requirements, and trailers must be stock type with swing gates and sturdy walls/floors. Additionally, the BLM’s Adoption Incentive Program allows adopters to receive $1,000 after successfully caring for the horse for one year.
