BLM to Host Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Event in Checotah, Okla.

The Bureau of Land Management will be hosting a two-day wild horse and burro event in Checotah, Oklahoma on June 20-21 at the Checotah Round-Up Club arena. The event will feature 150 wild horses and burros available for adoption, with adoptions taking place on June 20 from noon-6 p.m. and on June 21 from 8 a.m.-noon. Animals offered at the event are adult and yearling horses as well as burros that were once roaming free on public lands in the west.

BLM periodically removes excess animals from the range to maintain healthy herds and protect rangeland resources, making the adoption and sale program essential for achieving these management goals. Since 1973, BLM has successfully placed over 280,000 of these animals in approved homes across the country. To qualify for adoption, applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse, and have a minimum of four hundred square feet of corral space per animal with access to food, water, and shelter.

BLM staff will be onsite to approve applications and assist with the adoption process. Qualified homes must have the appropriate corral fence height for the type of animal being adopted, and animals must be loaded into covered, stock-type trailers with swing gates and sturdy walls and floors. The event will take place at the Checotah Round-Up Club arena, and for more information, individuals can call 866-468-7826 or visit www.blm.gov.
