The Colorado Bureau of Land Management is hosting a wild horse and burro adoption event at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock. The event aims to maintain healthy herds and rangelands, with BLM staff on hand to provide insights about management and adoption. About 35 horses and 10 burros will be available for adoption, with viewing opportunities on Friday and Saturday and a competitive bid starting at $125.
To qualify to adopt a wild horse, applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse, have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, and meet specific corral fence and trailer requirements. The adoption event is part of BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro program, aimed at transitioning animals from the open range to private care. More information can be found on the BLM website.
