The Bureau of Land Management will be offering four halter-trained fillies and four untrained burros for adoption at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds in Ferndale on March 15. The animals will be available for preview on March 14 and adoptions will take place on a first-come, first-served basis with an adoption fee of $125 per animal. Adopters must be at least 18 years old and meet the BLM’s facility requirements.
The animals being offered for adoption are certified to be healthy and vaccinated against common equine diseases. The adoption event is being held in conjunction with the Back Country Horsemen of California Redwood Unit’s Trail Obstacle Challenge event. The BLM is responsible for managing wild horses and burros on public lands and periodically removes animals from the range when populations exceed established levels.
The BLM’s wild horse and burro program allows for these animals to be adopted at events throughout the country. The agency aims to protect and manage wild horses and burros in balance with other range users, including wildlife and permitted livestock. More information about the program can be found online.
