BLM Continues Wild Horse Gentling and Adoption Partnership with Wyoming Department of Corrections

The Bureau of Land Management’s State Office has decided to continue its wild horse gentling and adoption partnership with the Wyoming Department of Corrections through a 5-year contract. This partnership will provide funding for the care of up to 200 excess wild horses and burros at the Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton, where trainers and wild horses work together to build trust and respect.

The Wyoming Honor Farm, a minimum custody facility part of the Wyoming Department of Corrections, has been working with the BLM since 1988 to train and adopt wild horses primarily from Wyoming’s public lands. Inmate trainers at the Honor Farm demonstrate techniques such as catching a horse, advance and retreat, picking up feet, and beginning to ride during gentling clinics held twice a year, where approximately 35 halter and saddle-started horses and some wild burros are available for adoption.

Those interested in adopting a halter or saddle-started horse or wild burro from the Wyoming Honor Farm can find more information on the BLM website. The partnership between the BLM and the Honor Farm aims to help both the wild horses and the inmate trainers transition positively back into society through training and adoption programs.
