Inclement weather caused the cancellation of half of Saturday’s races at Oaklawn, the entire day of races Sunday at Aqueduct, and the opening weekend at Fonner Park. The Dixie Belle Stakes at Oaklawn was rescheduled for the following Sunday, with entries being taken from scratch on Monday. At Aqueduct, snow arrived before the third race on Saturday, with as much as 1 1/4 inches expected to accumulate by Monday morning.
At Oaklawn, rain began Friday night and intensified on Saturday afternoon, leading to the cancellation of races 6-10. The weather was expected to improve on Sunday with a clearing sky and a high temperature near 43 degrees. At Aqueduct, eight overnight races were scheduled for Sunday with no stakes on the card, to be made up as late extras next Saturday with entries taken on Sunday. Fonner Park canceled its opening weekend due to weather conditions.
The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Grand Island, Neb., with snow accumulation and high winds expected. Fonner Park is expected to start racing next Saturday with a card beginning at 2:30 p.m. EST.
