Arizona’s Wild Burros and Horses in Need of Homes: BLM Adoption Events Announced

The Bureau of Land Management is holding two adoption events in Arizona next month for wild burros and horses, as part of Wild Horse and Burro Awareness Week. Arizona has the highest population of wild burros, with an estimated 6,205 as of March 2023. The first adoption event will be at the Marana Heritage Center on March 1-2, while the second event will be at Quail Park in Willcox on March 4-5.

Adoptions will be on a first come, first served basis, with untrained animals priced at $125 and trained horses starting at $1,000. Trained burros will start at $500, with prices potentially increasing based on demand. Training demonstrations for the animals will be held at both events, with inmate trainers from Arizona Corrections Industries leading the demonstrations. Animals can also be purchased online through the BLM Online Portal and picked up at the events in Arizona or at another event in Las Vegas on March 7-8 at Oliver Ranch.

The adoption events aim to find homes for the wild burros and horses, many of which were gathered from the deserts of central and western Arizona. The events will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about these animals and potentially take one home.
